Gum Disease

The mouth is a gateway to the rest of the body, and Byron C. Scott, DMD in Mobile, Alabama is committed to the oral and systemic health of all his patients. Gum disease has been shown to be linked to systemic issues like heart diseasediabetesstrokeosteoporosis, respiratory disease and cancer. If you have risk factors, early warning signs, active periodontal disease or are in need of surgery, Dr. Scott and his expert and compassionate team can help restore your gum health and your overall health.

Gum disease risks

There are many things that put you at risk for gum disease. According to the Mayo Clinic these risk factors increase the likelihood you will experience gum disease:

  • Heredity
  • Home hygiene
  • Tobacco use
  • Diabetes
  • Age
  • Decreased immunity, such as that occurring with leukemia, HIV/AIDS or chemotherapy
  • Diet
  • Medication use
  • Hormonal changes, such as those related to pregnancy or menopause
  • Recreational drug use
  • Poor-fitting dental restorations
  • Problems with the way your teeth fit together when biting

If you have any of these risk factors it does not guarantee you will experience gum disease, but is an indication to be diligent in your oral care.

Signs of gum disease

According to the NIH, signs you may have gum disease include:

  • Bad breath that won’t go away
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Painful chewing
  • Loose teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Receding gums or longer appearing teeth

If you are currently noticing any of these signs, please come see Dr. Scott so he can determine the best course of action. Gum disease continues to progress if it is not addressed in its early stages and can eventually lead to painful infection and tooth loss.

Customized Treatment

Gum disease treatment

Here at our office, we treat all phases of gum disease from a localized deep cleaning, to a Type IV Perio Treatment. Our practice has employed the best hygienist on the Gulf Coast with over 25 years of experience treating periodontal disease and periodontal bone loss.

Depending on your individual situation, Dr. Scott will come up with a custom treatment plan just for you. Often treatment includes scaling and root planing, where our skilled hygiene team numbs the area and quadrant by quadrant cleans below the gum line. You will also be counseled with regard to home care and possibly be put on special medication or medicated mouth rinses to treat the infection.

If you experience gum recession, Dr. Scott is experienced in the prestigious Chao Pinhole Technique. Traditional recession was surgically treated by cutting strips of tissue from the roof of the mouth, cutting and lifting the gum tissue and stitching the grafted tissue to the gums, covering the exposed tooth and tooth root. The procedure was painful and invasive. However, with Dr. Scott there is no need to experience all that pain. By utilizing the pinhole technique gums are lengthened, covering the recessed area without grafting or cutting.

1

Dr. Scott makes a tiny pinhole in the gum tissue and gently lifts the tissue away from the teeth, slowly stretching the gums down.

2

Once stretched, tiny pieces of silicone are inserted to help stabilize the newly stretched gums.

3

Recovery time is fast and most patients are back to normal life the next day!

We also perform crown lengthening procedures to aid in properly restoring severely worn or fractured/decayed teeth so that proper support and tissue health can be attained and maintained.
